James and I are talking about what to get Michael for his first Christmas. We already have a lot of stuff for him, and I’m sure there will be a relative or two providing us with the obligatory “baby’s first Christmas” tree ornaments, it’s not an easy task. This is not a Christmas that he will remember, I know, but I thought it might be nice to have a little something special for him that will stay with him through the coming years.
I have a couple of keepsakes that I don’t remember receiving. Things I have just always had. Since that nebulous time before memories start sticking. I’d like to give Michael something that he can always have, something with a story, maybe something that starts a tradition.
But is it just me, or are “things” less special these days? I mean, you can pay out the nose for a unique and quality gift, but when you don’t have money falling out your nose, then what? Do we make him something? Do we just forget the holiday this year and go on with our daily lives? Because a lot of the ads for gifts I see around me, in the papers or on TV, are for things that one might buy oneself anyway. Clothes, phones, cars, etc. And since our guy is too young for toys, I’m sort of at a loss for ideas this year.
Whatever we decide to do, I’m sure that it will be special in its own way. We are a family lucky enough to be overflowing with love, so even if there are no presents at all, it will be a great Christmas.

What about a stuffed animal? I have a few that have been with me since always, and I love them still…
You can even make one yourself if you’re feeling industrious and have access to a Joann fabrics.

As trite as it sounds, I highly suggest buying a not-’baby’s first christmas’-ornament. I’ve always thought the tradition of a new ornament each year is awesome – seeing as I never had it and am now trying to play catch up with myself.
I remember lots ornaments from growing up that I dubbed my favorites and plan on taking with me to my own apartment/house someday.

ETA: Since Michael was born in October, a fun starter might be a ghost or scarecrow!
